Slains and Collieston Community Council held its inaugural meeting on the 3rd of October 2008. Before then, Collieston Amenities Committee, established in 1957, had been responsible for ensuring that the character and amenities of the community were protected and maintained.  The previous committee had supported the move to full Community Council status as they believed it would provide enhanced status along with financial benefits to the whole community.

Twelve people from the parish of Slains had written to the Council’s Area Manager requesting that he begin the process of establishing a community council for the Slains electoral area.  Twenty people were nominated for election to the fifteen places for the new Council and an election was held in September.  Current Committee members are listed here.

Office bearers were appointed at the first meeting and a draft constitution was agreed which will be adopted following Council approval.  Community Council meetings take place approximately every six weeks when minutes are taken and posted on this website and on village notice boards.

Correspondence received by the Council is detailed fully in lists which accompany the minutes.  These are available for inspection by any householder or resident on request.  This also applies to the accounts, which are subject to an annual audit.

Aberdeenshire Councillors receive minutes of meetings and are frequently in attendance.

The Community Council has inherited the Amenities Committee’s news sheet called “The Collieston Blether” which it intends to carry on producing at regular intervals through the year.

The annual Gala was organised for fifty years by Collieston Amenities Committee and this is another role the Community Council will continue to undertake.  The Gala is the main fund raising event of the year.  It is a time when residents and visitors alike come together for a week of fun and activity.
