The summer of 2007 marked two special anniversaries in the Parish of Slains. During the first weekend of July, the community celebrated the 200th anniversary of the present church building and, at the end of the month, the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Collieston Amenities was celebrated during the annual Gala week.
To mark both occasions, members of Slains Kirk and the Collieston Amenities Committee worked together to erect a memorial plaque in the kirkyard, dedicated to men from the parish of Slains who gave their lives during World War II. This new plaque is situated alongside the one dedicated to those who gave their lives during the 1914-1918 World War.
The Ellon Branch of the Royal British Legion also contributed to the cost of the project and, on Saturday 10th November during a Service of Dedication at the War Memorial in Slains Kirkyard, the memorial plaque was unveiled by Rev Steve Emery. Wreaths were laid by Rear Admiral Steve Ritchie, representatives from the Royal British Legion and Aberdeenshire Council and The Memory was read by John Robertson.
Despite the inclement weather, a large crowd from the Parish attended and, following the Service of Dedication, a lone piper and standard bearers from the Royal British Legion led the procession to the Community Centre where refreshments were provided by the Collieston Amenities Committee.
