As the football season draws to a close, the best teams in Scotland are still battling to secure top spot in the Scottish Premier League. Unfortunately, those of us who support our local team will have to be content with distant memories of League Cup success, as it is safe to assume that this season’s coveted trophy will once again remain in Glasgow.
However, more than fifty years ago, the lads of Slains Football Team were giving their supporters plenty to cheer about after winning the Buchan Amateur League Cup in both 1951 and 1956. As well as playing against teams such as Foveran, Cruden and Ardallie in the Buchan Amateur League, the Slains team also played friendly matches, travelling to places such as St Fergus or Rosehearty.
The lads practised on Monday evenings when the manager, Andy Simpson, would announce his team selection for the next game. League games were played in the evenings, usually mid-week, from April to late July. Slains Football Team played their games at The Feu and the Cup Final was always held at The Halfway House.
Slains Football Team stopped playing in the early 1960s. |
