Collieston Amenities Committee was formed in 1957 with Sir Douglas Ritchie as its first Chairperson. Since then the Committee has carried out its role according to its constitution.
For some years the main focus of the Committee’s work has been the annual summer Gala, Bonfire Night, the Senior Citizens’ Christmas Party and Burns’ Night. In addition, keeping the village neat and tidy, equipping and maintaining the playpark and skate ramp and organising social events and activities go on throughout the year. The Committee has insurance cover of £5 million for public liability for all Committee-organised events.
In the late 1990s, following a public meeting, it became apparent that becoming a Community Council was not something the village wanted to pursue. However, the Committee is now acknowledged by Aberdeenshire Council as having equivalent status to that of a Community Council and as such receives relevant correspondence and is consulted and can comment on matters such as planning applications. This means the village has a two way channel of communication directly with the Council We are also represented on local groups in Formartine including the Formartine Partnership, Formartine Community Council Forum, the Community Safety Partnership and Ellon Community Development Group.
The Committee has actively pursued grants to help progress its work and enhance the village. These have included successful applications in respect of:
- Awards for All - playpark equipment and the skate ramp
- Environmental Awards - planters and compost and picnic benches
- Village Tidy Award - grass cutting expenses
Meetings take place approximately every six weeks with an Annual General Meeting held on the last Friday in September. Brinsley Sheridan, the Councillor for the Udny - Slains ward, attends every meeting.
There are 15 members of the Committee all of whom have to be residents or householders of Collieston or Slains Parish. New members are elected at the AGM, but co-opted members can join at any time to fulfil a specific role or function. The term of office is three years on a rotational basis. Minutes of each meeting are displayed on village notice boards and posted on this website
